Virginia Woolf’s argument for intellectual and material room reached a Barcelona stage in September. For a time, the theatre presenting it could not buy the room it wanted in two of the world’s largest social feeds.
Teatre Raval presented Clara Sanchis in Una habitación propia, María Ruiz’s stage adaptation of A Room of One’s Own, from September 16 through 27. The performance follows Woolf’s inquiry into women, fiction, independence, and the conditions required to make art. Read the production description.
The theatre said Meta rejected its paid promotion on Facebook and Instagram. An automated explanation classified the advertisement as involving social topics such as feminism and civil rights. The production itself was not prohibited, and accounts could still discuss it. The decision concerned paid reach: whether the theatre could use ordinary advertising tools to find an audience.
Then the gate reopened. Meta told the Guardian that the ad had been removed in error and was quickly restored. That correction changes the story. This was not a lasting ban on Woolf, and it would be misleading to preserve the first, more dramatic description after the platform reversed its decision. Read the report and its September 22 amendment.
The brief restriction still reveals something about the route between a work and its public. An automated system apparently treated a theatre’s promotion of a feminist classic as regulated social advocacy. Human review corrected the classification, but only after the theatre noticed, objected, and the decision drew attention.
We do not have the complete ad, the theatre’s account settings, or a measure of any lost ticket sales. We therefore cannot say how much the interruption mattered in practice. We can say that the performance continued, the advertisement was restored, and the correction itself is part of the record.
A question to carry forward: When an automated gate opens after review, who never learns that they could have asked it to look again?
Reader note: This account concerns paid promotion, not access to the performance or ordinary discussion of it. Meta’s response is quoted through the Guardian’s amended report. The available sources do not establish audience or financial effects.
